After years of limited development activity, The Shops and Lofts at 47 brought new, attractive, and much-needed housing and retail opportunities to the community of Bronzeville. Today, the property provides 96 fully-featured apartment units serving the growing need for affordable housing options within the City of Chicago. The development’s retail component, which includes the new Walmart Neighborhood Market, represents a significant milestone for the neighborhood and satisfies a critical void for full-line grocery options and access to fresh food. In fact, until the Walmart retail store opened in October 2014, the nearest grocery store was over a mile away making it difficult for low-income families to access quality food selections. The Walmart Neighborhood Market also successfully brought 100 full- and part-time jobs to Bronzeville. As a whole, the development ignited the retransformation of this underserved community and represents a flagship for housing and retail revitalization within the neighborhood.
